Incinerator Unit Refractory Lining
The Result
Our teams at Head Office successfully completed a project for a key client for the refractory lining of an incinerator. Scaffolding was also erected to gain safe access to all areas of the incinerator and industrial painting for aesthetics. The project was completed to schedule and without a safety incident.
The Challenge
Our client required the installation of refractory lining to the body, door, 4 of chimney sections and dividing brick walls of an incinerator for a crematorium in France.

What we did
The project began with our scaffolding access team erecting an independent scaffold around the incinerator. The scaffold had 2.5 lifts in it, with buttresses around for additional stability and was sheeted at the top level to protect the working area from winter weather.
Following the inspection and tagging of the scaffold structure, refractory teams began their phase of the project. The new lining was to be applied to the incinerator body, door, 4 no. stack sections and dividing brick walls. Refractory teams began the project by welding ‘V’ anchors to the incinerator walls, before installing calcium silicate boards – the first layer of the new lining. Anchors help to secure the lining in place, improving its overall performance.
Foil was then applied, using spray tac adhesive, to reduce moisture absorption from the castable. The bottom of the unit was then cast, and formwork set up to allow sections to the top to also be cast. Once the lining had set, the scaffolding structure was dismantled, and the incinerator unit turned horizontally so that brick work could be installed. Alumina fire bricks were installed to the inside of the unit.
Once the lining was inspected and passed quality control, our coatings division added the final touches to the incinerator. Operatives applied a full coat of alkyd enamel topcoat to the external surface both for added protection of the steelwork and aesthetics.
