Powertherm was delighted to be called upon to support another major construction project in the power generation industry.
Located in Grangemouth, Scotland, we’re supporting Brockwell Energy to deliver the Earls Gate Energy Centre Project, which is an energy from waste facility (EfW) that will produce heat and power.
Our teams are providing industrial insulation, scaffolding access, and electrical trace heating services across the energy production plant, which will provide low-cost power and the displacement of fossil fuels.
Our scope of services includes the completion of unfinished insulation & cladding to the boiler & associated ducting (secondary and tertiary air ducts) that was left from a previous contractor.
Our main industrial insulation scope consists of site teams installing insulation and cladding to various tanks, including the steam accumulator tank, condenser tank and the pressurised flash tank.
Grate hoppers, the economiser, steam drum, expansion flap ducts, exhaust ducts and other pipes such as the utility pipework are also being insulated with mineral wool insulation (in varying thicknesses) and cladded with aluminium cladding as part of the project.
Scaffolding access will also be supplied across the entire project to provide safe working conditions and ease of access around the plant for all contractors during the plant’s construction. Scaffold structures include birdcages, independent, towers, stairs, suspended and cantilever solutions to name a few; with over 300 tonnes of scaffolding materials on site.
Our electrical trace heating engineers will install over 1500m of heat trace cable and associated auxiliary equipment such as junction boxes. Where appropriate, self-regulating and mineral insulated cables will be applied to process pipework including water and steam supplies for frost protection requirements. Our trace heating team will also be designing and supplying control panels for the heat tracing system.
Expected to be an integral part of Scotland’s ambitions to deliver a zero waste, circular economy, which encourages waste reduction and boosts recycling, Earls Gate Energy Centre is a project that was granted in January 2017 to replace a gas fired plant. It will
create around 500 jobs during construction and 30 long term jobs during its operational life. The EfW plant offers a lot of benefits to the environment and will make measurable contributions towards the United Nations development goals that are aimed to be achieved by 2050.
The plant is expected to be able to process up to 216,000 tonnes of commercial and industrial waste every year, which will result in the diversion of 210,000 tonnes of waste per annum from landfill. In addition, this will have a positive impact on the reduction of pollution and odour emissions as well as the level of soil and water contamination created by landfill.
Earls Gate Energy Centre will generate approximately 33MW of heat for industrial use by a local chemicals manufacturer, and produce more than 22MW of electricity, for residential, commercial, and industrial use; with over 70% of electricity production from renewable biogenic materials. The plant will also be able to recover up to 54,000 tonnes of recyclable materials (48,000t of aggregates, 3,000t of ferrous metals & 3,000t of non-ferrous precious metals), which would have otherwise found their way into landfill. And retain sufficient capacity to produce additional electricity, steam and/or hot water.
The EfW plant is expected to be operational later in the year.
We’ll keep you updated with how the project is progressing and any new developments that Powertherm contribute too.
We wish all contractors on site success in their service supply.
Thankyou to everyone involved so far…
